Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

I’ve learned that the Milanese love to shop, and this shopping center is proof that they would never dream of putting the art of shopping into a crass stucco covered mall building.  No, shopping deserves a temple, and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is just that. Even if you are not a shopper, the people-watching is fantastic – not that I had hours to spend doing it but the 10 or 15 minutes was really good.  On one end of the mall I witnessed people walking up to a mosaic bull on the floor, stamping their heels and spinning around twice on the bovine’s testicular region.  I learned that it is a tradition in Milan that if you stand on the bull’s balls you will have good luck. The spinning comes in because many believe it produces even better luck – for everyone except the bull.  100’s of people do this everyday and so the mosaic has an indentation in the floor where the bull’s down unders used to be.  Not one to shy away from anything that can help me on a production I of course took a spin – No Bull!
