Climbing to 10,000 Buddha’s

A couple of days ago we took some time to visit the largest brass Buddha on earth but before that we went to the Las Vegas version of the temple.  This “attraction” is called 10,000 Buddha’s and sits on top of a large hill outside of Kowloon.  From the parking lot you ascend past some of the gaudiest ill conceived Buddha statues I’ve ever seen.  Each one is painted in gold with red lips and bad facial hair.  As you climb the staircase it becomes apparent that what you are witnessing is western consumerism with a communist religious twist – Las Vegas in the jungle.  Kind of shocking.  Once you reach the top the temple is small and lined wall to wall with little Buddha’s – supposedly 10,000 of them.  Inside the temple is a gift shop selling replicas of the little guys.  If you imagine a Buddhist temple at the Mirage Vegas then you get the idea.  Anyway, it was about 95º with a humidity level of at least 90% so by the time we got to the top of the hill we were drenched in sweat.  We bought some water from the convenience store next to the temple, shot some pictures and descended to the parking lot.  If you want a good laugh this might be worth the trip…
